Time - The ultimate equaliser

One element, one unit that envelopes all humans across the world is "TIME". We talk, act, behave and live under the grand influence of time, don't we? In a very philosophical way, we may say time is the only resource we all have and we all spend. So it makes a lot of sense that we spend it wisely as time is limited, isn’t it?

Let us delve into the question ‘What is time?’ It is probably what we keep a watch on in our clocks and gadgets, isn’t it? Wake up at 6:00 am, get ready by 7:00, breakfast by 8:00, reach office by 9:00 and the day goes on according to the timetable. Days begin and end, dates change, months and years follow and time continues to fly. Few days back we were celebrating new years and here we are almost half a year ahead. No wonder they say ‘Time Flies’. So is time limited to that time piece called clock? There must be more so let’s explore.

What if one completely removes the clock from the equation. Then we will be left with day and night or more precisely, morning, afternoon, evening and night. This means we try to divide time of the day according to the position of the sun, don’t we? But time is surely much more than just division of a day. We have all come across various time related idioms and proverbs like ‘Time flies’, ‘Time heals’, ‘Time is money’, ‘Give him some time’, ‘Time and tide wit for none’ and the list goes on and on…

In my understanding time is one of the strongest, most efficient equalisers. I feel time is a representative of the superpower – God. Time always was, is and will be. We all have time but it is limited. We have the same number of hours in a day, irrespective of gender, economic status, religion, caste or what have you. A day is only 24 hours long, a year is 365 days and ultimately life does come to an end which means ‘Time over – Game over’. We are born and we have time until we die.

Some of us constantly threaten ourselves with death and therefore try and use all the time we have constantly working, amassing wealth and postponing things that we really should do to another day. We only do the urgent things like answering work calls, replying to work related messages, dong things that are economically and financially important or lucrative. We procrastinate the important things like spending time with family, resting, thinking, playing, being joyful. We call ourselves workaholics and feel great pride in the same. But this is where we must understand that it is necessary to take a break before we breakdown.

Taking a break is also great way of utilising time. It is a probably a very efficient way to spend time. A good break only enhances your perspective, creativity and effectiveness. There’s nothing wrong in taking a break as long as one realises that a break is all about being active in some other, constructive, joyful manner.

On the other hand, we have people who lead a life as if it is unlimited for them. They waste and while away time in useless, unproductive activities without realising what they actually lose. Time is probably the most perishable resource we have which once wasted and gone never returns. And yet we have people around us who show utter disrespect towards this representative of the superpower. Such people realise the significance of time they have lost in their time of struggle, misfortune or what we call ‘bad time’. This brings us to the point where we come across the categorisation of time as ‘Good time and Bad time’. We had somebody known as the ‘King of Good times’, remember?

Can time be good or bad? Does time have the capacity to appreciate or punish individuals? The answer is quite simple – YES. The most powerful empires have succumbed to the wrath of time, haven’t they? Time is all pervasive and powerful. It is limited for one and all. Everyone experiences good time as well as bad. Therefore it would be fair to say that “Time is the ultimate equaliser”.

65 years Gold

They were all of sixteen and one plus twenty,
When they ringed each other with duties plenty.

By the age of seventeen and five more
They weren't singles any more.

From 1960, all the way to 2025
Years of togetherness are sixty five.

Just a year ahead, when tragedy knocked the door,
He was only 5 months old, how their hearts tore.

Two years passed when came Panna the daughter,
Rushi came next, just a couple of years        later.

Thus by 1965, the family was complete;
Set to sail the ship of life in Gujarat heat.

With resources few and means limited,
Life wasn't easy with duties unlimited.

Scarcity was like air all around,
But together always, happiness they found.

Let me introduce you to the couple,                babu mushai!
The lady is Damyanti and the man is              Gunwant Rai.

Even with less, they discovered more,
As prudent spending was at the core.

Accept, adjust, adapt and let go
Love inspite of all that is what they show.

Parents, siblings, children, grand children and more,
They have provided themselves to each and every chore.

Inspite of all these, they made some time,
To fight and play, to sing and rhyme.

Now old and slow but absolutely wise,
Their energy although is a total disguise.

Now they just can't resist fighting each          other.
We laugh, knowing, they can't resist each     other.

Their marriage is sixty five years Gold.
How marriages should be; youngsters behold.

Lonely?

It was a month after I had bid him a final goodbye. Life was not easy at all and loneliness was my company. His cremation had resulted into my burial into work. That was the only way I could keep my mind away from all the memories. I just couldn't imagine my world without him and yet here I was busy, as busy as a bee. That evening I reached home, unlocked the door, entered my lonely nest, locked the door behind me and went straight to my room. After a quick shower, looked into the mirror and moved away without noticing.

He kept looking at me...

Action and Consequences

Sujoy -

A young man, fresh out of college and in his first job, was super excited to conquer his desires and fulfill his material aspirations. Sujoy had lived a life of discipline and self-deprivation in order to study well. His childhood was full of unfulfilled material wishes; wishes rejected by parents claiming they knew what was best for him. They provided him with the best study material, more than adequate infrastructure to educate him well.

Now all the hard work had fructified and Sujoy had completed an MBA with Marketing from an above average college. He had joined an MNC with a package he was quite boastful of. Although his parents, as usual, felt that he could have done better. He had been just a three month old baby in the corporate world and had absolutely no idea of the nuances of this world. He was clueless about the show-off, the politics, the hypocrisy, the fake appreciations and the cut-throat competition. He was also unaware of another field of management - Finance.

An intern, Surbhit, entered office one day beaming with pride and happiness. He had purchased an I-phone, the price of which was in excess of eighty thousand rupees. The seniors were all gaga about the purchase, appreciating the technology, discussing the greatness of some of the companies in the field of innovation. In general, the intern was a show-stopper that day. Someone even remarked looking at Sujoy, that not everybody knew how to live life.

Within the next couple of days, Sujoy made an investment decision. At least he thought it was one. He purchased a phone the price of which was in excess of one lakh rupees. He bought it on a one year installment option. Moreover he was certainly proud of the fact that finance company gave him the required credit within no time. Everybody went gaga over his phone now. Today was his day to be the center of attraction. He made sure to meet the colleague who had remarked about how to live life. His father was not particularly happy and appreciative of this decision.

A couple of months passed and a colleague of his, Abhay, got a new bike; a stylish, expensive 250cc bike loaded with features, with an on-road price around 2.8 lakh rupees. Abhay could not stop talking about it, describing his love for his new machine. Sujoy could not resist anymore. He fell out of love with his bike. He felt angry with his father to have given him a basic 110cc bike. He felt he had to upgrade to thrive in the corporate world. There were colleagues talking about how Abhay's personality had suddenly become impressive and how he would be able to convince potential clients and girls just by getting off the bike in style.

Sujoy had to upgrade. He researched some bikes; he fell in love with a bike and it had some of the latest features, great power 400cc, very stylish. Sujoy knew his personality would benefit immensely. Needless to say, the price was in excess of the one Abhay had bought. The price was 4.2 lakh rupees on road. Could he afford it? Well, Sujoy's father didn't think so. Sujoy was confident. He went to the showroom and was impressed with the finance company's quick response and ability to offer a loan to him. He thought he was getting so much credit owing to his respectable salary, education and his ever developing personality. The finance people were so polite and co-operative; for every document they asked for and that Sujoy didn't have, they had a solution. They ensured that the young lad could buy his dream bike within a week.  Sujoy blessed these angels. He surprised his parents with the new bike. At least he thought so, for them it was no less than a shock.

Sujoy's father expressed his displeasure at the dinner table. Sujoy was in no mood of receiving a lecture; he made it clear that he could take his financial decisions. The topic ended quite abruptly, so did dinner. A lot was unsaid and unheard.

Next day, was Sujoy's day; showing off his new found love. He had even purchased new pair of clothes to accompany the new bike. A grand brand must accompany another, he thought. As expected, all colleagues were full of awe for the new machine. Some were even envious and Sujoy could feel the pleasure of making them jealous. He loved the praise that he had upgraded his personality. He was loving his life. A new latest hi-end phone, a grand new bike, a job with a respectable salary, some installments though.

The pleasure was quite short-lived for Sujoy. One of his colleagues got a hi-end laptop with latest features. It was his claim to fame that day. He said this was a real investment as the laptop helped him in presentations, it helped him in designing and editing marketing ideas. Another colleague remarked that this was truly an investment as he would open it in front of clients and present to them the idea as well as the laptop. This was in true sense a personality booster and an asset. Things like phones and vehicles were just depreciating assets. Sujoy felt this was said on purpose. His heart burnt. He though to himself that he was going to upgrade his laptop anyway. So may be now was the most appropriate time to do so.

The finance team at the laptop store seemed inefficient to Sujoy. They were asking too many questions, they wanted too many documents. It was as if they were unwilling to give him a laptop. He had to borrow some money from a friend at work to pay the down payment as they made him pay nearly half of the price. The price was in excess 1.2 lakhs. Still they did offer him a credit of around 60% of the price. 'Finance people are always so co-operative and accomodative', he thought to himself.

So now, he was the coolest guy at office. He had bought a great phone, trendy bike and the latest laptop in a span of six months. 'Could life have been any better?' Parents were as usual unhappy. He had accepted that parents would never be happy with his success. That is what he thought of them. Colleagues and interns were all over him. He enjoyed being the coolest techno-savvy guy. He had the latest games on his phone and laptop. His bike was the fastest and most stylish. He had even given a grand treat to his colleagues at a classic restaurant. A couple of months had passed.

Sujoy realised that almost 90% of his saving was wiped off in down payments. He didn't mind that, what he was a little concerned about was that nearly 80% of his salary was spent in installments. He just didn't have any money left in hand by the tenth day of the month. Fuel seemed too expensive these days; although the price had risen only by 10% since his last bike. He had to avoid going out with friends for dinners, movies or just some fun long rides.

He had the gadgets but he was not very excited about them now. The finances were depleting fast. Sujoy's father could sense that things weren't very smooth. With years of experience and wisdom, he had expected this to happen. Sujoy on the other hand was stressed out managing the installments and the private loan from a friend/colleague. The word had spread that the so called friend had lent him a loan. All the glitter and glamour had burnt down by now. The stress took its toll and showed itself on work performance. The boss ensured a detailed criticism in front of the team. After all, his junior had boasted too much over the past quarter with gadgets but the performance was no where near. Sujoy was insulted. He was humiliated so much so, that he considered quitting the job.

Sujoy could not quit. He needed a job. His personal finance was such that he could not risk quitting and then searching for another job. He had to swallow the bitter pill. Stress was high and like never before. Sujoy's father asked if things were fine. Dinner table talks were generally limited as Sujoy was too submerged in his gadgets and thoughts, to talk. Sujoy didn't wish to share but he couldn't resist looking away. He didn't want his mother or father to find out with his facial expression. They already had. Post dinner, Sujoy's father went to his room and sat beside him. He asked Sujoy to share whatever it was. He said it in a tone Sujoy just couldn't resist. He opened up. He told him how he was insulted by his boss, how he wished to quit, how his financial situation was absolutely pathetic, how he was forced to take the insult.

Sujoy's father told him that actions have consequences. He told him about the corporate culture, why his boss might have blasted so much, how the others had, in a way, coaxed him into buying unnecessary things, how the finance people work. Sujoy realised that this lesson he had learnt the hard way.

Sujoy's father guided him with a financial plan. He insisted that Sujoy must work more efficienty in the same company, cut down on unnecessary expenses on snacks, beverages, accessories. Sujoy agreed and went back to some financial discipline. For regular days,  the old bike was out and running again. Petrol didn't seem too expensive on that. He knew he was only facing consequences to the thoughtless financial decisions he had taken. Within a year and half, he had wiped off two loans. He had saved a little better. He hadn't fallen for any comparisons with anyone. He didn't become miserly, however he ceased to be a spend thrift as well.  He was a prudent spender now.

Sujoy had never thought of the financial consequences earlier although now he first thinks of them then the action. He learnt his financial lesson at a young age.

Mouthful

One day while having breakfast at a hotel, I noticed the large spread of food laid out for all the guests. A buffet full of colours, flavours, cuisines, beverages, and so much more was on offer for us. I glanced at people around and their tables which were clustered with sumptuous meals. My table was also packed with various dishes and beverages. I was enjoying the abundance that life had blessed me with, when a fact struck me.

Although I had so much on the table, I could enjoy only one thing at a time. I could only have a mouthful of one thing to enjoy it completely.
With so many choices on my table, I could not focus on the mouthful, rather focused on what  to eat next. I guess it was the same with everybody around me.

Now, I enjoy the mouthful to the fullest. I appreciate every bite that is taken rather than the one to be taken. I cherish what I have rather than what I want next.

Happiness

Happiness are the little joys,
Just look around, Oh girls and boys.

Happiness is here and now
Just feel it and take a bow.

Happiness is a state, it's a choice,
Just very simple, cut all the noise.

Happiness is easy why make it tough
Just realise, what you have is enough.

Happiness is family and good friends
Just cherish the time before it ends.

Happiness is care, happiness is health
Just understand, health is the real wealth.

Dripping Diamonds

On the cross-trainer
Working hard,
I see diamonds dripping down
From my face to the ground.

The value of these diamonds
Is in letting them go...
That's how you get yourself
To shine and glow.

It seems hard to start but
You must begin, however slow...
You'd suddenly notice that
You've started enjoying the flow.

Time might be scarce but
An hour to yourself, you owe.
It's the key to confidence or
The prison of constantly feeling low.

It is for the machine
That houses your soul.
Help it function sans friction,
Shouldn't that be your utmost goal?

Use it, don't abuse it.
As they say about your health
It is after all, apparently,
Your primary wealth.

Let those diamonds drip,
Let those diamonds flow...
Get your life in your grip,
Get your inner self to glow...

The Mumbai Crowd

The Mumbai Crowd!
It's fast, furious and loud,
The Mumbai crowd.

There's hustling and bustling.
There's power and proud,
In the Mumbai crowd.

There's a jostle, a tussle.
There's weakness to muscle
In the Mumbai crowd.

There's honking and beeping
There are words and bleeping
In the Mumbai crowd.

On best buses, on local trains,
In taxies and cabs, also on planes,
Travels the Mumbai crowd.

On roads, on pavements,
In high-rise, in basements,
Dwells the Mumbai crowd.

Constant wakeful walk,
Or magical sleepy walk,
But walks, the Mumbai crowd.

Cool winters and summers' noons,
Or be it knee-deep monsoons,
Thrives the Mumbai crowd.

There's good time and bad time
But absolutely no bed time
For the Mumbai crowd.

Some worry, some fear,
Some hope, some cheer,
Expresses the Mumbai crowd.

It's real, it's illusion
It's confident, it's confusion
Appears the Mumbai crowd.

It starts not to end
It rises, not to bend
Attitude of the Mumbai crowd.

Riches and Rags
Simple and swag
All i see in the Mumbai crowd.

You love it, you hate it,
You judge it, you rate it,
Carefree is the Mumbai crowd...

Artificial Intelligence - KALI on the rise!?

Artificial Intelligence is something you would have heard of in the last couple of years. In the recent past, I've had many conversations and discussions with friends and relatives who highly appreciate artificial intelligence. They admire the genius - Elon Musk who seems to be spearheading the research and development of Artificial Intelligence (AI). I also admire him for his Human Intelligence (HI) moreover his IQ level seems to be at an enviable level. People seem to be in awe of AI despite knowing how AI constantly threatens to take away human jobs. It has already begun to replace humans in various fields rendering some people jobless. For instance, the latest example in my limited knowledge of AI wonders is the AI platform 'Do Not Pay' which will defend a client in court in one of the most powerful democracies  - America. The platform also claims that if the AI is unable to defend its client successfully, Do Not Pay will pay the penalty on behalf of the client.

I for one and am not a big fan of AI. I'm in awe of the HI of Elon Musk but not of the AI that these people are so unintelligently creating. One of my close friends argued that AI is inevitable irrespective of what people like me thought of it. Well, that is exactly what I also agree with. But that doesn't make me like it or appreciate it. He even said that my way of thinking is not progressive rather it is regressive. Well, it might be. To add on and explain his point, he even sent a podcast to me in which the well-informed and knowledgeable guest answered questions about the changing world and how AI is evolving too soon. That is exactly what makes me worry for the entire humanity.

I worry that more and more people will become depressed due to AI evolution. Even in that podcast, when the highly informed guest was asked about the type of jobs that shall remain in the future, the first answer was psychiatrist and psychologist. Do you see my point? This is exactly what I think and it is not a sign of a happy future. If people won't have a fruitful, engaging, lucrative activity, how will the 8 billion people or the majority of them survive? If AI can do most or all of the hard and creative skills, then we humans would be deprived of realizing our potential completely. How will humans use the remnants of the brain after the smart gadget revolution?

In the Hindu faith, we are aware of Kaliyug. The era where the demon Kali creates havoc, chaos, and catastrophe. They say that we are in the middle of Kaliyug and this demon shall surface at the peak of Kaliyug. If you observe closely, the demon KALI has an AI in his name. It is a short name, only four letters out of the 26 English letters, and yet AI. I have neither named KALI nor coined the abbreviation AI. Is it just a coincidence? Here is what I would like to coin for your reference and discretion:

K.A.L.I. - Knowledgeable Artificially Living Intellectual

K.A.L.I. - Killing all life instinct

AI will have stages of development, five stages, that's what I have learned so far. Stages range from 0,1,2,3,4. For instance, a car that can drive you to your destination, safely, without you having to lift your finger. All you have to do is feed the required destination information. By the way, such car companies advise that it is a must to sit at the steering wheel with your hands on the wheel so as to avoid any unfortunate, rare mishap. Do you realize what that advice does for the company? It completely takes away all accountability and onus from the car manufacturing company. If one meets with an accident because he/she dozed off or was busy talking with co-passengers, then it is his/her fault. So, on the one hand, such companies literally take away our car driving skills by selling an AI car that self-drives, and on the other hand, they ask us to remain vigilant all the time. Laughable, isn't it? As the stages evolve, so does efficiency. The question is how much efficiency are we aiming at?  Over-efficiency is dangerous.

Think about it, a lot of people in this world have cars. How many of us understand the mechanics of this machine? Very few of us do. The one thing we know apparently is driving. These automated cars will take away even that one skill from us. I'd like to quote G.B. Shaw's essay 'How wealth accumulates, and men decay'. I would suggest you to search and read this essay to understand. I also wish to clarify here that I do believe in capitalism however AI is extreme capitalism and nothing extreme is good. Rather let me put it this way, anything extreme is harmful, chaotic, disruptive, and catastrophic.

Here's some more evidence, the genius Elon Musk himself has warned humans that one day AI could outsmart and endanger us He calls it a demon himself. Source:   https://www.analyticsinsight.net/ai-the-biggest-existential-threat-to-humankind-says-elon-musk/

Nevertheless, he is also one of the founders of OpenAI which has developed chatbots that can accomplish a lot of tasks for humans in a matter of seconds thus replacing humans who are employed to do those tasks. If this continues in the same fashion, humans will have nothing to do. How on earth (literally) are we going to spend time, and survive? Even worse is when the AI outsmarts humans, AI will overpower us. The creator (human) will be the slave then. By the way, even through these AI gadgets, chatbots, and more, only those who are creating them will become uber-rich. The rest of us will go down the slope.

So what is the solution? Is it possible to escape this KALI? I think it is. Scientists keep innovating, that is their job. Whether we should appreciate each innovation is our choice. This choice is our power against this KALI. Let us not use AI products that are beyond stages 1 or 2. Let us not use any such AI which renders humans completely useless. Let us use and appreciate only those AI gadgets, apps and gizmos which are completely in our control. Let us ensure that AI remains only supplementary to humans, not even complementary.

Next time when you buy or use any AI platform, ask yourself whether want the demon KALI to win and rule or you want to support the KALKI within you?

K - Knowledgeable           vs         K - Kind

A - Artificially                   vs         A - Artistic

L - Living                            vs         L - Loving

I - Intellectual                     vs        K - Krishna

                                                        I - in you
